Crypto Capital Gains Tax Estimator (Australia)
Every disposal of cryptocurrency — selling for AUD, swapping one coin for another, or spending it — is a capital gains tax (CGT) event in Australia. This estimator applies the two rules that matter most: the 50% CGT discount for assets held longer than 12 months, and your marginal tax rate.
Educational estimate only — each crypto disposal is a separate CGT event and personal circumstances vary. See the crypto tax guide and confirm with a registered tax agent.
How the estimate works #
- Capital gain = sale proceeds − cost base (what you paid, including fees).
- If you held the asset for more than 12 months before disposing, the gain is halved first (the ATO’s 50% CGT discount).
- The discounted gain is taxed at your marginal rate — it simply lands on top of your other taxable income.

This is an educational estimate, not tax advice: it simplifies the rules and can’t cover your circumstances. For your actual return, talk to a registered tax agent — and confirm anything uncertain against the ATO’s own guidance.
